Resilience of University Students: Coping Strategies, Social Support, Competence, and Academic Performance

초록

This study was to explore whether resilient students have higher social support, competence and academic performance and also use better coping strategies than vulnerable students. In this study, 204 university students with high negative life experience were classified into two groups based on scores of resilience quotient: resilient and vulnerable. Independent samples t-tests were performed to investigate group differences on academic performance, coping strategies, social support, and competence. It was found that resilient students had higher task-oriented coping strategy, social support from friends and competence than vulnerable students, whereas vulnerable students had higher emotion-oriented coping strategy than resilient students. Using logistic regression analyses techniques, it was concluded that 70.4 percent of the students in the study sample were accurately classified as either resilient or vulnerable students in respect to the task-oriented and emotion-oriented coping strategies. Implications of the findings were discussed in terms of coping strategies.
