<노마드랜드>에 나타난 정주하지 않는 삶의 양면성: 과거의 흔적과 현재 사이의 부유

초록

This essay aims to analyze the ambivalent values of nomadic life which Chloé Zhao’s film Nomadland (2021) portrays through various lives of workampers. Based on Jessica Bruder’s non-fiction with the same title, Zhao’s film captures the life of van dwellers from the perspective of Fern, the film’s main character. In this film, most roles are played by the real-life nomads. Bob Wells, the organizer of RTR annual meeting, is played by himself. Linda May and Charlene Swankie are also playing the same roles as themselves. By the way, the main character Fern is fictional, who punctuates and filters her own encountering with the real nomads in various places such as Amazon CamperForce program and RTR annual event in Quartzsite, Arizona. Through Fern’s gaze on the nomadic life, the film shows not only the struggles of nomads who lost their houses after the Great Recession, but also the values of nomad community which attempts to make a spiritual quest for the humanity, free of capitalist desires. And thereby, Fern contintues to move on the road, cherishing all the loved ones to her heart and wishing to see them down the road. The traces of her journey are tinged with the twilight which spreads out far across the horizon of the vast desert in the American Southwest, like the ghosts of a Western.
