초록
This exploratory study aimed at identifying how adults in career transition retrospect their career adaptabilities with regard to changes in their career attitudes, their networking in career transition, and how to foster their competencies required at transition. In-depth interviews with 11 mid-career adults were conducted to produce their career experiences about those three questions. The analysis of qualitative data revealed the themes of each domain. With the changes in career attitude, participants emphasized that they found what they wanted and developed the competencies related with those wants. Also, participants reported their wants to be employed as barriers to be independent agent in their career, with an increased awareness of continuous self-development and positive attitudes. Secondly, networking ability is reported as an important career adaptational task, but substances of network are more important than the breadth of network itself. Lastly, participants recognized the importances of continuous learning during the process of career transition and they participated in various official and unofficial educational programs. Needs to develop career competencies related with their work are highly valued especially for interpersonal competencies developed from their past experiences. Based on these findings, the practical implications for adults in transition or outplacement were drawn; Proactive outplacement services and educational interventions should be strengthened, and provision of networking opportunities among adults with similar career goals and orientations is critical to promote their career adaptabilities.
