Carbon dots (CDs) have emerged as an exceptionally versatile set of nanomaterials because of their low toxicity, biocompatibility, and tunable fluorescence. However, the intrinsic limitations of CDs prevent them from being widely used. In this review, gold ion doping is examined as a practical method for enhancing the physicochemical and functional characteristics of CDs. The synthesis procedures and multifunctional uses of gold ion-doped CDs (AuCDs), including codoped forms such as Au-NCDs and Au-SCDs, are fully examined in this work. These doped CDs are ideal for biosensing, drug delivery, and theranostic applications because of their increased catalytic activity, fluorescence intensity, and electrochemical performance. To emphasize the importance of doping and codoping in enhancing various elements, characterization techniques have also been developed. Moreover, AuCDs have demonstrated enhanced performance in drug and vaccine delivery, nucleic acid transport, biosensing, bioimaging, catalysis and improving the anticancer efficacy of chemotherapeutic agents. Consequently, the versatility of CD nanomedicine is crucial, particularly for intelligent drug delivery systems and tailored theranostics.
