This study analyzed the ways that the unconscious desire of the contemporary Korean and Chinese people was projected on the nine-tailed fox in The List of Monsters, a webtoon series published serially in Korea and China simultaneously. In the series, the nine-tailed fox Soh Ju-a is a character based on classical narratives including Bongsinyeonui. A variety of narrative elements, including the great war of monsters in her previous life, the male protagonist’s reincarnation and romance, chivalry and fantasy, and the resetting of relations between human beings and monsters converge in her, who is recreated as an active helper to the male protagonist oriented toward the “coexistence of human beings and monsters.” In the webtoon series, Soh Ju-a has evolved into a boundary being between the subject and others. She is a nine-tailed fox, but she persuades and eradicates monsters to maintain the human world. She identifies herself with the human subject and tries to be incorporated into the human world as a subject. Simultaneously, she is an other-like being with monster attributes. This represents the operation of the hegemony of the mainstream ideology to have the nine-tailed fox reproduce the desire for the human-centric “desire of the other.” This way of reproducing the nine-tailed fox represents the operation of political unconsciousness of both the contemporary Korean and Chinese people that claim to support the pursuit of the public value in the coexistence of “human beings and monsters/civilization and nature” but have an ulterior wish that the “others-outside world” will have balance around the “me-human being-subject.”
