글로벌 서비스 러닝과 다문화주의 : 베트남인 한국어 학습자를 위한 언어-문화 번역 프로젝트의 사례에 대한 연구

초록

This article aims to delineate a certain tendency of global service learning in the discipline of humanities, by focusing on its meaning as a multicultural practice. For this purpose, it attempts to analyze one case study on the language-culture translation project for the Vietnamese learners of Korean language, which was carried out as a program for global service learning by the students of English in Chung-Ang university during the summer of 2019. The project incorporated the basic aspects of service learning into the task of translating a list of English-based Korean words into the Vietnamese language. In this task, Korean students performed various group activities of configuring various socio-cultural contexts of English-based Korean words and providing the information of these words for Vietnamese students. In these processes, Korean students communicated with Vietnamese students in English, which functioned as a lingua franca for this task of cultural translation. The final goal for the project was to make the list of English-based Korean words in Vietnamese. This challenging project paved the way to contribute to the community of Vietnamese learners of Korean language by making the supplementary text for explaining the usages of English-based compounds, blends, and derivatives in Korean language. This aspect of the educational service for global community could be closely connected to the effects of learning that the student participants from both Korea and Vietnam could achieve in their engagement with the activities of cultural translation by way of their special talent, English.
