초록
This study aimed to analyze the impact of the self-classification system, introduced in June 2023, on film and video content rating practices in Korea. The results indicate that, in the film sector, the upward trends in the “All” and “12+” rating categories slowed, while the “15+” category declined. No statistically significant change was observed in the “Restricted (19+)” category. In the video sector, there was a decline in the “15+” and “Restricted (19+)” ratings immediately following the policy implementation; however, both category subsequently rebounded. These findings suggest that the introduction of the self-classification system generated a tangible institutional effect, particularly within the video sector. The implications of this study are twofold. First, the results empirically demonstrate that the self-classification system can improve industrial efficiency while also contributing to the public interest in youth protection. Second, by revealing distinct policy effects across the film and video sectors, this study provides an empirical basis for considering the system’s future application to the film industry.
