롤랑 바르트의 수사학에 관한 연구

초록

The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between the status of rhetoric and semiology in Barth’s theory. For this study, we reviewed Roland Barthes’ writings, Le Système de la Mode, ‘L’ancienne rhétorique : aide-mémoire’, ‘Rhétorique de l’image’, etc. What we are able to grasp through this review was that Barthes’ ‘new rhetoric’ built a theoretical domain based on the mechanism of general semiotics, that is, the mechanism of signification that can be applied to all objects. Barthes’ remarks that connotations occur within the system of rhetoric showed that his rhetoric puts the problem of signification, that is, interpretation and reading, at the center of the study. We introduced Jean-Marie Floch’s theory and saw that the new rhetoric applies not only to speech and writing, but also to non-linear objects such as images. What Floch emphasized like Barthes was that the role of semiology was to elucidate the mechanism of signification, and Floch tried to analyze the formative object, including the analysis of linguistic behavior, through this mechanism. Floch’s research direction was not different from the way Barthes’ rhetoric dealt with objects. Not only the overall theory presented by Barthes, but also the terms he used contain his unique thinking. This is the case with rhetoric, which we are interested in this paper, and references to various writings are needed to define the concept of terms such as ‘text’, ‘myth’, ‘connotation’ and ‘denotation’. The reason is that Barthes’ research journey is related to so many different disciplines and shows interest in a wide range of subjects.
