1970년대 한국가정의 경제생활

Economic Life of Korean Households in the 1970s

초록

The study aims to provide a detailed analysis of the economic life of Korean households in the 1970s. The study analyzed a home accounting book and conducted interview with the housewife who wrote the home accounting book in the 1970s. In addition, the study examined articles on the economic life of Korean households in newspapers and women’s magazines published in the 1970s. In the 1970s, most Korean households suffered from price hikes due to oil shocks. Housing, food, heating, education, medical, electricity, water and transportation costs were raised by more than two digits each year. The price increase was almost transferred to Korean households, and Korea’s domestic capital strengthened its capital accumulation and monopoly through collusion with the Park Chung-hee regime. The conclusion of the study is that it is not reasonable to understand the Park Chung-hee regime as a combination of the positive side of “economic growth” and the negative side of “political dictatorship.” The reason why the Park Chung-hee regime could be maintained in the 1970s was not because it gave economic stability to most Korean families at the time. Rather, it could be because the majority of the people in the 1970s felt the task of political democratization far away because maintaining the domestic economy through austerity was an urgent task. To sum up, for most Korean families, the 1970s were an era of poverty and patience with the hope that their children would get better in the future.
