초록

This essay aims to make a socio-cultural survey on how Monument Valley on the border between Utah and Arizona could be settled as an archetypal space of realizing the American myth. Monument Valley was the place where Navajo Indians had lived for more than one thousand years without being invaded by outsiders until the mid-nineteenth century. And it was John Ford's Western genre films that played an important role to make Monument Valley as an icon of American nature, which used to be the land of Navajo Indians. Through these films, American public could experience the sublime landscape of American South-west nature, and since then, Monument Valley of the American South-west has become the archetypal space of the American Myth. On the other hand, however, Monument Valley has been the homeland for Navajo Indians. And thereby, Monument Valley has been a space where two different cultural values get intertwined. It is an archetypal space for American values which derived from the frontier spirit, while it is also an iconic space for Navajo Nation. In this respect, Monument Valley remains a space of Navajo Indian culture, without being entirely enframed by the white supremacy discourse of John Ford's Western films.
