초록
This study examined the effect of perception of Lookism on appearance beliefs and appearance anxiety and explored the role of appearance conversations in the process. In particular, this study categorized appearance conversations that occurred in daily interpersonal communication context into fat talk among peers, negative and positive evaluations of appearance, and healthy appearance conversations among parents, and analyzed their effects on the internalization of Lookism. The online questionnaire survey was conducted with 268 college students. The results were summarized as follows. First, the results showed that the higher the perception of Lookism, the stronger the appearance beliefs corresponding to Lookism, and the stronger the appearance beliefs, the higher the appearance anxiety. Second, while appearance conversations had no effect on appearance beliefs, they had effects on appearance anxiety. The more fat talk with peers, the more exposed to negative appearance evaluations, and the more appearance anxiety. But the more healthy appearance conversations with parents, the less appearance anxiety. Third, the interaction effect analysis showed that the higher the perception of Lookism, the more positive appearance evaluation had the effect of decreasing appearance anxiety. This study confirmed that the internalization of Lookism occurred not only in the cognitive dimension of appearance beliefs but also in the emotional dimension of appearance anxiety, and confirmed that different types of appearance conversations had different effects on appearance beliefs and anxiety.
