Intertextual construction of Lee Jun-seok’s political discourse

초록

This study examines how a distinctive political style is constructed through textual and intertextual practices in Lee Jun-seok’s discourse during the 2021 party leadership election in South Korea. Rather than focusing on ideological content, the study analyzes five key texts—including televised debates, a candidacy declaration, and interviews—as a genre chain through which a coherent political persona is performed and stabilized. Drawing on Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis, the study identifies three recurrent stylistic resources: rationality, combativeness, and familiarity. These resources form a hybrid “multi-register” political style, enabling the speaker to appear simultaneously as an ordinary, competent, and assertive actor. The analysis demonstrates that such stylistic stabilization produces ideological effects by naturalizing meritocratic notions of fairness and reframing political conflicts as technical issues. By highlighting the role of intertextual patterning, this study argues that contemporary political power lies not only in explicit claims but also in the cumulative organization of stylistic resources across texts.
