Third-Person Effects of Suicide News Reports on Middle and High School Students

초록

This study examined negatives effects of suicide news to adolescents with the perspective of the third-person effect hypothesis. A survey conducted on a sample of 319 of middle school and high school students. The results showed that younger adolescents are likely to be negatively influenced by suicide news. The suicide news caused perceptual bias to other adolescents, especially to younger adolescents than themselves, which indicates the third-person effects of suicide news reports increased by social distance. Our study also identified differential third-person effects in terms of levels of depression, indicating importancy of recipients’ psychological conditions in identifying perceptual bias toward potential negative media messages as well as grade in school and gender, at least negative effects of suicide news reports. In addition, supports for regulating suicide news were mainly explained by negative attitudes towards suicide news reports.
