Adorno and the understanding and evaluation of artworks

초록

This paper examines the possible conditions under which an artwork is made into an authentic artwork through Adorno's aesthetic theory. For Adorno, art and artwork are autonomous in that they follow their own inherent laws of independence, and social in that they are the product of social labor in the spirit that cannot be separated from the real world. Adordo evaluates authentic artwork from the perspective of dialectical aesthetics and artistic criticism, and distinguishes between high art and low art. For Adorno, a authentic artwork is an expression of the spirit and truth content of art through the constellation and configuration of the elements that make up the work, and their structural consistency and unity. According to this, the evaluation of the work depends on grasping the truth content as a spiritual content inherent in the artwork through distancing from the work, and the authentic artwork is a work that promotes a sense of social criticism and resistance, embodies freedom and liberation from social restraint and oppression, and expresses the possibility of a better world through making these truth contents into a artwork.
