Analyzsis of University Students’ Perceptions of Learner-Centered Instruction

초록

The purpose of this study is to explore learner-centered classes in universities. To this purpose, importance of learner-centered instruction and actual class performance were compared and analyzed based on the perception of college students. First, the core elements for realizing learner-centered instruction were derived through a review of prior studies, and data on learner-centered instruction were collected through an online survey targeting 515 students at S University in Gyeonggi-province, Korea. In addition, the perception of the importance and performance degree of learner-centered instruction was analyzed through the importance-performance analysis(IPA). The results of this study are as follows. First, students perceived that the learner-centered instruction was important, but the actual level of performance was low. Second, ‘communication and interaction’ was found to be a high level of importance and performance. Third, as a result of IPA analysis, a total of 10 items were derived for each area, three areas: “Learning philosophes”, “Teaching and Learning Activities”, and “Class Objectives” as the focus areas for improvement efforts. Based on the research results, this study discussed and suggested practical plans for the effective realization of learner-centered instruction in future universities.
