속담 속에 반영된 불교어휘의 언어인류학적 연구

Korean proverbs provide various aspects of Korean society and culture. Proverbs, in general, are transmitted from generation to generation. Proverbs often contain traditional folk terms as well as contemporary social and cultural terms of daily life. Hence proverbs are an unique linguistic text providing Korean traditional culture and tradition. In particular, Korean proverbs cover broad spheres of terms concerning Buddhism, rites of passage, Shamanism, folk belief, etc. This paper focuses on Buddhist terms inside Korean proverbs from standpoint of linguistic anthropology. Namely this research deals with Buddhist terms and culture by examining practical language usages inside Korean proverbs. In linguistic anthropology proverbs are one of the major interest in scrutinizing relationship between ethnology and oral folk culture. As an language of metaphor proverbs connotate ethnographical details and social situations. In this research over 170 proverbs concerning Buddhism found inside Korean proverbs are the principal sources for investigation. Since Buddhism was and still is an influential belief among Koreans frequent language usages of proverbs regarding Buddhism are common and natural. Some results of analysing Korean Buddhistic proverbs are as followed: (1) terms for Buddhist god and deities, monks, temples, holy texts are most frequently used, (2) Buddhist terms concerning monks have various semantic components, (3) usages of morphological taboo phrases. In sum, Buddhistic proverbs visualize practical usages of language in both traditional and contemporary Korean society. Furthermore the linguistic anthropological research on various usages of Buddhistic proverbs is an efficient approach to intrigue future Korean linguistics.
