Riverside Korean Town was created in 1904 when Ahn Chang-ho opened a Korean labor agency here and accepted Koreans from Hawaii. Ahn Chang-ho and his comrades promoted the United Korean Association (UKA) that expanded the Korean-American Brotherhood based on the diaspora experiment in the Korean town, and organized the first branch of UKA in Riverside. Korean residents in Riverside consisted of families settling in and seasonal migrant workers, among which family migrants led the Korean society. Ahn Chang-ho s close associates, including Lee Gang, who created the Korean town in Riverside, later promoted UKA and the New Korean People s Association, and served as the leader of the UKA. They participated in the Shinmin-hoe (the New People s Association) organized by Ahn Chang-ho in Korea, and were dispatched to Manchuria and Russia as correspondents to spread the local branches of the UKA there. Riverside s Korean community established its framework around the Korean Labor Agency, and then diversified its bases into the local branch of the UKA and the Korean Mission. In the meantime, the diaspora model of the Korean community in North America was created with the triangular axis of the local branch of the UKA located at the peak of Korean autonomy, the Labor Agency, which was the base of economic life in the Korean community, and the Korean Church as the base of religious and cultural activities. After returning to Korea in 1907, Ahn Chang-ho developed the diaspora experiment in Riverside Korean Town into extensive Korean independence movement that encompassed cultural movement, educational & industrial movement, and political movement as a trinity at the same time. In addition, he refined the Korean immigrant s guidelines for life as the basic virtues of the New Nation, such as Musil Yeokhaeng and Jeongui Donsu. Later, Riverside s diaspora model became a ideal type in the construction of the overseas Korean independence movement base in the 1910s.
