Patterns in Variation and Variation in Patterns: A Case of Consonant Cluster Variation in Korean

초록

This paper explores the characteristics of consonant cluster variation in Korean, focusing on three types of clusters, i.e., ‘lp’ (ㄼ), ‘lk’ (ㄺ), ‘lm’ (ㄻ). Data were collected from 16 Seoul Korean speakers of their twenties. Between-speaker variation, within-speaker variation and between-item variation were analyzed. It is shown that the speakers should be divided into some groups each of which has its own characteristics of variation. In addition, it is argued that phonological environment, lexical category, morphological information, and perceptual cues affect the occurrence/non-occurrence of variation in the production of consonant clusters. It is also argued that variation occurs meaningfully when there is conflict among these factors while it rarely or never occurs when there is no conflict among them.
