The Effect of Working Memory Capacity on Food-Related Impulsivity after Stress in Individuals with Binge Eating Tendency

초록

The purpose of this study is to test whether working memory capacity (WMC) is related to impulsive response to high-calorie food in individuals with binge eating tendency. 120 students completed an assessment of WMC by n-back task. Before and after the stress induction, participants performed a go/nogo task in which go cues and nogo cues were presented with pictures of palatable and healthy foods. Also, participants completed food choice task in which they chose between a fruit and a chocolate bar. The hierarchical regression analysis showed that the significant interaction between binge eating tendency and WM task error after stress induction. Individuals with higher binge eating tendency and lower WM task performance made more commission error in go/nogo task after exposed to stress. Whereas a hierarchical logistic regression analysis revealed that significant effect was observed in the food choice task in different direction. These findings indicate that lower WMC may decrease the ability of individuals with high binge eating tendency to handle stress and increase impulsive responses to high-calorie foods.
