Principles of Hermeneutic Dialogue and the Cultural Sublation of Differences: Focusing on the conversation between Gadamer and Derrida

초록

This study reinterprets the philosophical encounter between Hans-Georg Gadamer and Jacques Derrida in Paris in 1981, not as a mere breakdown of communication but as a meaningful starting point for an in-depth philosophical discourse exploring the dialogical nature of language. While the existing academic discourse tends to view their meeting as parallel lines of dialogue, this paper focuses on the dynamic of conversation that embraces the difference of the Other from the perspective of Gadamer’s claim of the “universality of hermeneutics.” Gadamer sought to engage with Derrida’s concept of différance through the hermeneutic principle of ‘understanding the Other,’ and in the process of accepting Derrida’s deconstructive critique, he reflected on the risks of distortion inherent in understanding the Other. This led to a deeper openness toward tradition and the Other. Likewise, Derrida moved away from an attitude of absolute separation to recognize human finiteness and to seek the possibility of unconditional hospitality. By tracing their ongoing correspondence and the trajectory of their thought after the Paris meeting, this study aims to demonstrate that the principles of hermeneutic dialogue are not metaphysical violence that erases the uniqueness of the Other, but are instead a core philosophical foundation for realizing mutual cultural diversity and hospitality, turning differences into a shared horizon of ethical coexistence.
