초록

Purpose: This paper empirically analyzes the spatial spillover effects of port and maritime transport activities on regional air quality in South Korea, focusing on nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) concentrations at the city and county level. Research design, data, and methodology: This paper uses monthly panel data from 229 local governments in South Korea from 2018 to 2024. Spatial dependence is identified using Moran’s I, and spatial econometric models are applied to estimate the effects of port activities on regional NO₂ concentrations. Results: There are strong positive spatial autocorrelations to NO₂ concentrations. Portrelated activities, especially non-container cargo, significantly increase NO₂ levels in both local and neighboring regions, while distance from ports and meteorological factors such as temperature and wind speed reduce pollution levels. Conclusions: The environmental impacts of port activities extend beyond administrative boundaries and are spatially interconnected. Findings suggest that differentiated and regionally coordinated air quality management strategies are required, rather than uniform, port-specific regulatory approaches.
