Discourse regarding home accounting and household accounting book of the 1920~1930s

초록

This study analyzes household-related discourse of the 1920~1930s and how the discourse affected korean households. The household-related discourse produced and distributed by Japanese imperialism and enlightened intellectuals did dual roles. Japanese imperialism took advantage of household-related discourse as the ideological mechanism to conceal or rationalize its colonial exploitation. The discourse made korean people thought of home economic difficulties as a problem of individual families. Also, household-related discourse was used for enlightening purposes such as literacy, the rationalization of farm management and the modernization of the korean home. The ability to write household accounting book was assumed as a indicator of literacy and accounting knowledge for the rationalization of farm management was emphasized. Enlightened intellectuals claimed the scientific home management by using household accounting book and thought home accounting as a useful means for creating a modernized housewife and modernized home. In conclusion, the household-related discourse of the 1920-30s were the ideological mechanism for the maintenance of Japanese imperialism’s colonial exploitation system and were enlightened intellectuals’ aspirations to create a modern home. The contribution of this study is that it is the first study to examine how household-related discourse affected korean household in 1920~30s. In addition, this study attempts interdisciplinary research on the association between accounting and everyday life.
