ObjectivesThe absence of sexual consent is a key indicator of sexual violence. However, intentions to obtain sexual consent can vary because of diverse contextual factors such as cultural and gender norms. This study explored and compared the factors associated with intentions for sexual consent among three East Asian countries-South Korea, China, and Japan; each country is influenced by Confucian cultural values, with unique cultural and gender norms.MethodsData for this cross-sectional study were collected from 338 adults: 104 from South Korea, 135 from China, and 99 from Japan. Permissive sexual attitudes, traditional sex-role norms, sexual communication self-efficacy, and intentions to obtain sexual consent were assessed.ResultsPermissive sexual attitudes and traditional sex-role norms were negatively associated with sexual consent intention, while sexual communication self-efficacy was positively associated. The patterns varied across countries. In South Korea, all variables-permissive sexual attitudes, traditional sex-role norms, and sexual communication self-efficacy-were significantly associated with intentions for sexual consent. However, permissive sexual attitudes did not correlate with consent intentions in China and Japan. In terms of demographics, gender was significantly associated with consent intentions in China, whereas educational attainment and frequency of alcohol consumption were significant factors in Japan.ConclusionsThe results underscore the importance of developing culturally specific protocols and educational strategies to prevent sexual violence in East Asia, a region characterized by significant cross-cultural exchanges in industry and education.
