Educational needs analysis for enhancing the competency of media education instructors

초록

This study aims to construct a competency framework required for media education instructors and to analyze their educational needs. Drawing on previous research, three major competency were identified—media competency, civic competency, and educational competency—comprising eight sub-competencies: access and control, critical understanding, expression and creation, social communication, responsibility and rights, instructional design, teaching methods, and assessment and improvement. A survey was conducted with 84 certified media educators to assess their educational needs. The findings revealed that the instructors showed the highest demand for training in social communication, followed by critical understanding, teaching methods, access and control, responsibility and rights, instructional design, expression and creation, and assessment and improvement. The ranking of educational needs varied according to the characteristics of the instructors. For Level 2 instructors, the need for training in instructional design and teaching methods was high, whereas Level 1 instructors showed higher needs for social communication and critical understanding. Instructors teaching primarily elementary school students reported higher needs in the areas of access and control, as well as critical understanding, while those teaching mainly middle school students indicated greater needs in social communication. These findings suggest the necessity of developing and providing tailored competency-enhancement programs that take into account instructors’ characteristics, namely their certification level and the type of learners they teach.
