초록

In this paper, we examine the responses of recent defenders of causal theories of explanation to the equilibrium explanation problem presented by E. Sober as a counterexample to causal theory of explanation. We argue that there is an inherent dilemma causal theory of explanation must have, and that attempts to make equilibrium explanations compatible with causal theory of explanation cannot escape this dilemma. In this process, we will attempt to present clearer criterion for what a causal theory of explanation is, and will also shed light on the deep mechanisms by which equilibrium explanations are generated.
