탈북 작가 김유경 소설 연구 - 탈북자의 디아스포라 인식과 정치의식의 변화를 중심으로

Since the 1990s, the number of defectors from North Korea in the Korean society has increased dramatically, and the interest in escaping North Korea has been growing in the field of Korean literature. Along with works from the older Korean writers whose main topic is defecting from North Korea, there have been active creative activity from writers who are defectors themselves. Defector-novelists have introduced works from a variety of genres, ranging from novels, memoirs, autobiographies and poetry, and are giving substance to their voices. Particularly, the defector-novelist Kim Yu-gyeong, who presented the novel <Love Song of the Young> in 2012 in her first appearance in the field of Korean literature, has demonstrated her literary advancement from her previous depiction-testimonial style narration. Moreover, in her subsequent novel, <Element of Human Degeneration>, she has shown a unique style of literary advancement as the painful process of identity- seeking by North Korean defectors meets the topic of political prison camps. It is meaningful that Kim’s novel ponders on how the defectors themselves reflect on themselves, beyond the painful but much-repeated narrative of defection by risking one’s life and being an illegal alien in China. Moreover, new attempts in literature in understanding the new potential of North Korean defector-novelists can be made through such efforts. Moreover, the image of North Korean defectors who are seeking their new homes in South Korea and elsewhere around the world is deeply meaningful as a type of modern diaspora. Kim’s novel presents a variety of perspectives on the perception of diaspora by the North Korean defectors. Through an analysis of the novel by the defector-novelist Kim Yu-gyeong, this paper examines the relationship between the growth of consciousness of North Korean defectors and the influence of defection, and explored the changing process of the defector perception of diaspora as well as their political consciousness. The purpose of this exercise is to explore the internal drivers of the sense of political calling, the contradiction of a violent regime, as well as love and lust, which provide for important milestones in the literary visualization process of North Korean defector-novelists.
