A Feminist Analysis on Research of Women's Labor in Korea: Focused on 『the Korean Journal of Sociology』 and 『Economy and Society』

초록

This study conducts a feminist analysis on articles about women's laborpublished in two major sociological journals, the Korean Journal ofSociology and Economy and Society over the 30 years, in terms of theirtopics, methodologies, and perspectives. Major results of the study are asfollows: First, in two journals, the volume of research on women's laborhas increased since 2000, while there were few in the 1980s and 1990s. Most of the research have focused its topics on gender differences of labormarket status, while production regime and labor relations were minortopics in the journals. Second, one of trends in women's labor research isthe use of quantitative research tools setting gender variable at individuallevel and revealing gender differences. In spite of their contribution to makegender differences in labor market visible, we need to be cautious to usegender as a general explanation rather than as an analytical category. Finally, research on women's labor tends to have used inclusive methodologies acrossthe line between subjectivity and objectivity which have been controversialin selecting a research methodology. Still we need to think deliberately offeminist epistemological questions such as how we know women's experience and construct a knowledge about it.
