Study on Early Childhood Educators’Perceptions and Experiences of Near Miss Incidents and Strategies for Safety Management Improvement

초록

This study analyzed early childhood educators' perceptions, experiences, identification, dissemination, and follow-up actions concerning Near Miss incidents, aiming to explore improvement strategies for a proactive paradigm shift in early childhood safety management. An online survey was conducted with 277 early childhood educators. The findings revealed that despite a very low level of conceptual understanding of Near Misses among educators, their experiences with various Near Miss types showed a strong correlation with actual safety incidents. Educators recognized the positive impact of identifying and disseminating Near Misses on child safety management; however, a tendency for underreporting was observed during follow-up processes, often attributed to reasons such as‘ability to resolve independently’or ‘fear of criticism.’The implications of this study are: first, an insufficient conceptual understanding of Near Misses is prevalent; second, a non-punitive reporting culture is underdeveloped, potentially hindering the reporting and sharing of incidents; and third, a systematic organizational framework for accumulating, sharing, and utilizing precursor information is lacking. Therefore, this study emphasizes the necessity of proactive safety management through Near Miss practices and suggests strengthening educator training, establishing standardized manuals, and ensuring robust organizational support.
