초록

This essay aims to examine how the ambiguity in maculinity and moral action is portrayed in Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog(2021) by focusing on the aspects of the main characters and their relationships. In the classical Western film genre, masculinity is symbolized by the outlaw hero who carries a gun and acts upon private justice beyond the social system of the law. In addition, the boundary between the good and the evil gets blurred in the characters of this film, unlike those outlaw heroes of the classical Western genre films. Phil, who is portrayed to be the most masculine figure in this film, uses his knife instead of the gun, which symbolizes his masculinity. He also displays his masculine power by torturing other figures in the verbal and psychological ways, including his brother George, Rose and her son, Peter. However, as Peter finds out the secret of Phil’s homosexuality which engaged him with Bronco Henry who was his mentor, the relationship between Phil and Peter begins to change. As Peter eventually carries out his revenge, the boundary between the good and the evil becomes ambiguous.
