This study examines the relationship between career choice motivations and turnover intentions among rural teachers in Henan Province, China. Using a quantitative approach, survey data from 186 rural primary and secondary school teachers were analyzed through descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis. The results show that while rural teachers predominantly enter the profession with strong intrinsic and altruistic motivations, their turnover intention remains relatively high. Specifically, altruistic motivation negatively affects turnover intention, whereas passive motivation has a positive effect. Despite the high social status of teachers in China, even rural teachers tend to choose the profession based on intrinsic and altruistic reasons. However, their relatively high turnover intention contributes to instability in rural teacher supply. These findings highlight the critical role of career choice motivation in improving teacher retention and reducing turnover in rural schools.
