신문기사에 나타난 북한이탈주민 지칭어 분석 —지칭어와 관련어의 공기어를 중심으로—

This study analyzed co-words in reference terms for North Korean defectors and other related terms through a large-scale newspaper corpus. Previous studies on the newspaper coverage of North Korean defectors have mainly focused on the journalistic tendencies and frames of specific news companies. However, this study aims to uncover specific linguistic elements that contribute to the negative perception of North Korean defectors. To this end, the frequency of major reference terms and co-words was analyzed, and the co-words of “탈북,” “이탈,” and “이주’” were analyzed as well. Through this process, it was confirmed that the proportion of negative semantic prosody of the co-words for “탈북자” was higher than that of “새터민,” and also that the co-words for “탈북’”and “이탈” showed higher rates of negative semantic prosody compared to “이주.” This shows that the use of reference terms for North Korean defectors that focus on “이주” must be encouraged in place of others. As our society is becoming multicultural, perceiving North Korean defectors as immigrants in a multicultural society instead focusing on compatriotism or a singular ethnic group must be encouraged. This study is meaningful, because it provides a linguistic foundation for a proposal of reference terms for North Korean defectors by showing the specific aspects of newspaper coverage of North Korean defectors through a large-scale newspaper corpus. However, our method of analysis was not as detailed as a statistical analysis could have been. Additionally, the analysis only focused on newspaper terms, even though our linguistic reality is centered more on broadcasting and social networking services.
