Self-reflexivity of Leonard Cohen’s Music in Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, A Journey, A Song

초록

Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, A Journey, A Song (2022) is a documentary on “Hallelujah” which Leonard Cohen published in his seventh album Various Positions in 1984. Co-directed by Dan Geller and Dayna Goldfine, this documentary explores how the song was created, produced, covered, and disseminated through various stages of the Western popular culture for the recent four decades since its release. The film attempts to configure the complexity of what this song implies in terms of its spiritual, sexual, existential and emotional dimensions of Cohen’s music and life. For this purpose, the film makes various detours to the archived interviews and conversations with Cohen, along with the directors’ in-depth interviews with Cohen’s producers, old friends, singer songwriters, and journalists. Throughout these montage procedures, the film evokes various resonations across the ambivalently interwoven layers of the song for the flames of love and lust between the holy and the broken. Based on the notion of interwovenness, this essay speculates on how the song self-reflexively expresses Cohen’s lifelong struggle to find the significance of his emotional and spiritual experiences by compounding the holy and the broken aspects that Cohen attempts to recontextualize from the word 'Hallelujah'.
