미술관 도슨트 제도의 역할과 그 의미에 대한 반성적 고찰

The docent system in art museums was first introduced in 1907 at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, with the purpose of supporting the aesthetic experiences of the general public, who were often unfamiliar with the appreciation of fine art. The role of the docent was to provide guidance for visitors who found it difficult to approach the meaning of artworks directly, aiming to help them anticipate what the artist intended to convey. In this sense, the docent system was conceived as a means of enriching the public’s aesthetic experience of artworks by facilitating deeper engagement with their meaning. Within this context, the present study examines the characteristics of interpretations provided by museum docents in contemporary Korean society and identifies aspects that require critical reconsideration. To this end, the study reviews the emergence and historical background of the docent system and examines key discussions on fine art and aesthetic experience, as an understanding of its original concept and significance is essential for reflecting on its current manifestations. As discussed in this study, contemporary docent commentaries tend to focus on delivering extensive factual information about artworks and artists, often providing direct interpretations of meaning. Such practices risk encouraging visitors to conflate the understanding of extrinsic information with aesthetic appreciation, thereby potentially diminishing the intrinsic value of aesthetic experience. Accordingly, this study proposes that docents should refrain from offering direct interpretations and, rather than emphasizing factual knowledge, should guide visitors through appropriate advice on visual elements within artworks so that meaning may be discovered through the visitors’ own engagement. This discussion is expected to offer meaningful implications for the future direction of the museum docent system, whose importance continues to gain increasing recognition.
