The number of patients with chronic disease, including chronic kidney disease (CKD), is increasing worldwide. Exercise is effective in managing health for these patients; however, there is still no consensus on appropriate intervention protocols. We performed a systematic review of randomized clinical studies to assess the effectiveness of exercise intervention on quality of life (QOL) in CKD patients. Using Evidence-Based Healthcare Collaborating Agency guidelines, 3,308 studies were initially identified and 11 fit the Scottish Intercollegiate Guideline Network criteria. Ten studies showed improvement in some aspect of quality of life after intervention. Common features of interventions associated with improvement in QOL included twice weekly aerobics with or without strength training, individually adjusted or low-to-moderate intensity activity, simultaneous counseling, and durations exceeding 5 months. Patients were more likely to report improvements in QOL pre-dialysis. This study suggests that exercise intervention programs should be tailored for the individual and accompanied by counseling to increase adherence. © 2016 International Information Institute.
