‘Politics of Disgust’: Korean Conservative Protestant Discourses against Homosexuality

초록

This study aims to explore discourses against homosexuality, which have been constructed in a particular Christian group in South Korea. Specifically, we analyze several ‘scientific’ texts produced by the Korean Sexology Research Association from a feminist perspective. The Association was founded in 2014, guided by Christian communities and scholars. The findings of this research are as follows. First, in the texts, science is classified into two categories of “distorted” and “true” sciences. “True science” is combined with Christian morality, which justifies heterosexual relationship for the purpose of procreation. Second, the homosexual as ‘disgusting’ Other are defined as the ‘abnormal’, ‘unnatural’, ‘immoral’ and ‘abhorrent’. Third, throughout these ways, ideologies of normative heterosexuality and gender hierarchy become reiterated and intensified. On the other hand, there are some contradictions and ironies revealed in the logic where the idea of performativity of sexuality, the ambivalent location of Christian belief related with science, and the anxiety of declining mega churches are deeply embedded. In conclusion, Christian’s anti-homosexual discourses intersected with sexology has nothing to do with Christian sprit, nor ‘objective’ science.
