Narrative Study of Netflix series Stranger Things : With a focus on the TRPG Dungeons & Dragons motif

초록

This study analyzes the mystery narrative of the Netflix original series Stranger Things(2016–2022), created by the Duffer Brothers, via the format of the TRPG Dungeons & Dragons (hereinafter, “D&D”) that several of the main characters, teenage boys, play. Furthermore, this study seeks to explicate supernatural phenomena that were not clearly explained in the series through the lens of D&D. To this end, it first examines the characteristics of the TRPG D&D including its rules and terms, traditional narrative methods, and game culture. Subsequently, the study analyzes how D&D game culture is embodied in the series through the relationships and actions of the main characters, and examines how they employ D&D rules and strategies to find a way to defeat monsters in the real world. Through this analysis, this study demonstrates that the motif of D&D is more than a nostalgic cultural element of the series’ setting of the 1980s. By doing so, it argues that the D&D motif plays a key role in the game-loving teenage boys’ interpretation of mysterious phenomena and highlights the value of friendship and sacrifice through their team play.
