This study investigated the performance of an electrically heated catalyst(EHC) system composed of an electrically heated three-way catalyst(EH TWC) and a catalyzed gasoline particulate filter(EH-cGPF) in a mid-size hybrid vehicle under real driving conditions. The EHC was designed to enable rapid catalyst activation during cold start by applying a 1.5 kW electric heater for 40 seconds before and 20 seconds after engine start. Experiments were conducted using a chassis dynamometer under the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Cycle(WLTC) and the Urban Dynamometer Driving Schedule(UDDS) to evaluate emissions characteristics. In the WLTC, the EHC system achieved 200 °C in approximately 12 seconds—38 seconds faster than the non-heated case—resulting in a 37.5 % reduction in CO and a 17.4 % reduction in THC emissions during the first 200 seconds. Under the UDDS cycle, the EHC-equipped vehicle demonstrated CO emissions of 0.074 g/km, significantly below the U.S. Tier 3 limit of 0.621 g/km, while NMOG+NOx slightly exceeded the standard. These results confirm that the direct-heating EHC system significantly improves cold-start emission control and demonstrates compliance with both Euro 7 and U.S. Tier 3 regulations when applied to hybrid vehicles.
