초록

In macro-economic history, it is continued what is the determinants of long-term economic performance. Nowadays ‘Marxian Exploitation Hypothesis’ is denied. Since the Age of Enlightenments, ‘Geography Hypothesis’ and ‘Culture Hypothesis’ are continued to be concerned. Recently, ‘Institutions Hypothesis’ is brought to the core. In this paper, Exploitation Hypothesis and Geography Hypothesis are reviewed critically and Cultural Hypothesis since Max Weber is considered as a part of Institutions Hypothesis. Institutions Hypothesis for the explanation of economic growth is supported by historical facts, such as the success story of island Venice, Dutch primacy in world trade and England’s economic hegemony, and overtaking England by Germany and U.S.A. In contrast, Spain and France are used as examples of institutional failure.
