초록

This study deals with forced prostitution in the army brothels in occupied France and Poland and in the Nazi concentration camp brothels during the Second World War. These special brothels were planned and managed by the German army and the SS as an essential part of the war system. The army brothels were established for the benefit of the German military force and were controlled by the military sanitation authorities. The SS installed and managed brothels in the major concentration camps to exploit the available prisoner labor. This paper focuses on the question of how this wartime brothel system has been dealt with in the postwar era. The existence of the brothels was concealed after the end of the war for the following reasons. First, the Nazis were believed to have followed their ideology of protecting “sound” sexual morality. Second, those forced into prostitution often hid their past because of the social stigma concerning even coerced prostitution. These factors made it difficult to recognize them as victims of the Nazis. Last, the existence of the forced prostitutes was believed to disturb the collective narrative of Nazi victims. The army and the SS supported the establishment and running of the brothels systematically. Thus, brothels were a central apparatus of the state for conducting the war. They reveal the structure of state-based sexual violence in wartime. It took more than 60 years for the rehabilitation of the victims and compensation for their pain. For this to happen, the collective memory of the Holocaust, which had presented a unified image of the victims, had to be overcome. The delayed exposure of forced prostitution made German society aware of the fact that processing the history of Nazi rule cannot be considered finished, because there are still people to whom rehabilitation and compensation must be extended.
