The paper observes and analyzes how the Japanese Empire imitated·appropriated·reinvented international and colonial exhibitions as a cultural tool of colonialism by focusing on the cases of the 1910 Japan-British Exhibition and the 1929 Choseon Exhibition. The first half of this paper traces the diplomatic processes after the victory in the Sino-Japanese·Russo-Japanese War, in that Meiji Japan, a new emerging imperial power in the East Asian region, had joined the ‘Imperial Club’, using the Japan-British Exhibition as an opportunity to announce officially the annexation of Korea to obtain the recognition from the Western powers. The second half of this paper reexamines and reevaluates the nature and characteristics of the Choseon Exhibition as an effective example of the Japan Empire’s implantation of ‘cultural rule.’ Whereas the Choseon Exhibition had stimulated the ‘colonial nationalism’ propagated by the major nationalist daily newspapers by highlighting the negative/exploitative aspects of the event, a multitude of ordinary Koreans who visited the exhibition subconsciously nourished and desired for the inevitability of modernity, thus breeding a seed of ‘colonial modernity.’ This paper concludes that 1) the Japan-British Exhibition and Choseon Exhibition well demonstrated how the Japanese Empire successfully positioned and justified itself as a nation that willingly took a ‘yellow-man’ burden’ of civilizing neighboring countries.; 2) the steel gun-boat and machine gun are not exclusive ‘tools of empire’, but ‘world/colonial fairs’ and other international events such as the Olympia are insidious and invincible tools of empire as well. This is truer and more applicable in the so-called post-colonial globalization era.
