초록

Polyphenolic compounds, secondary metabolites, are bioactive substances present in various food sources including fruits, vegetables, nuts, cereals, and beverages. They have potential health benefits in human antioxidation, anticardiovascular disease, anticancer, antidiabetes, and antineurodegenerative disease. The antiviral activity of many polyphenolic compounds has been studied against human RNA and DNA viruses. Each antiviral polyphenol showed the virus-specific inhibition in a concentration-dependent manner. Depending on the physical characteristics of the virus and replication cycle, the inhibitory mechanisms of polyphenol targets on various steps included viral entry, genome replication, viral protein synthesis, and release. As some polyphenols activate the various cell-signaling pathways, the regulation of inflammatory cytokines and immunity contribute to antiviral activity. As some polyphenols have similar inhibitory mechanism to antiviral drugs, the combination of them could reduce viral titer synergistically. Therefore, antiviral polyphenolic compounds can be promising to prevent or treat infections of various RNA and DNA viruses. © 2018 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
