A Study on the Application of Playful Design Elements in Children's Hospitals

초록

This study examines the current application of playful design in children’s hospitals in Korea and its limitations. With pediatric healthcare infrastructure declining due to low birth rates, the research emphasizes the need for emotionally supportive and developmentally appropriate environments. Field observations were conducted at three major hospitals in Seoul—Seoul National University, Severance, and Seoul Metropolitan Children’s Hospitals—focusing on outpatient and public areas. Playful design was analyzed across visual, auditory, and tactile domains. Findings show that hospitals mainly employ low-cost, visually oriented features such as murals, character icons, and color zoning, while auditory and tactile elements remain limited. This reflects a preference for static, low-maintenance designs constrained by safety and operational factors. The study suggests that integrating multisensory elements under strict hygiene and management standards could enhance children’s emotional stability and engagement in future pediatric environments.
