The paper examines the operation and characteristics of village organization in Wolpyeong-ri, Daejeong, Jeju from the late 19th to early 20th centuries. Wolpyeong-ri was established between 1855 and 1861 by being separated from Dosun village. From the late 19th century to the early 20th century, the villagers built and shared funeral supplies such as hwadan (bier), jangmak (funeral tent), and sangyeo (bier) as communal goods. First, in 1897, hwadan and jangmak were newly built. They were financed through the contributions of the villagers. Hwadanjangmakshinjoyusa oversaw the production of hwadan and jangmak, and ijol was in charge of the maintenance of them afterward. Jangmak was re-built in 1913 and 1923 and sangyeo was built in 1917. Second, in the late 19th century village executives in Wolpyeong-ri consisted of Gyeongminjang, Gamgwan and Dongjang. Gyeongminjang handled administrative and judicial affairs. In some villages Gamgwan was called Mokgam or Nonggam. Gamgwan was referred to as Nonggam in Wolpyeong-ri. In 1908 instead of Dongjang, the title named Ijang was used. From the records written in 1917 the information on the title of the village executives used at the end of the 19th century were not found. Third, Wolpyeong-ri established a communal fund through dongjeobrye, sikri, fines, and profits from communal farms. Based on the villagers whose birth years could be confirmed from dongjeobrye list, dongjeobrye is supposed to be contributed by households with children aged 1 to 4 in Wolpyeong-ri. Sikri was collected based on bominjeon and ballijeon, and fines were collected from those who violated village rules such as gambling, and slash-and-burn farming. The communal fund raised this way was used not only to build funeral supplies but also to prepare for the village ritual and family registers.
