롤랑 바르트의 이론에서 ‘유토피아’에 관한 연구

A Study of ‘Utopia’ in Roland Barthes’ theory

초록

The purpose of this article is to examine the extension of the concept of ‘utopia,’ a term proposed by Barthes, in relation to writing. We first explored the concept of writing by contrasting it with discussions on Sartre’s Committed Literature. Next, to further clarify the concept of utopia, we examined writing by contrasting it with speech. Writing, although clearly a language act like speech, is motivated by meaning-making actions that occur within a system beyond the communicative purpose of language acts. Barthes’ utopia cannot be defined in itself but is negatively defined in opposition to mythicized writing. Utopia refers to the point that can be reached through all the work and results that renew mythicized writing. In this article, we discussed Barthes’ proposed ‘Japan’ and ‘the amateur’ to explain this utopia. The subject as an amateur, who sees the object only as an empty signifier, and ‘Japan’ as an object existing solely as a signifier, can serve as good examples for examining an aspect of this utopia.
