<쥴과 짐>을 통해서 본 근대적 지식인의 초상

초록

This essay aims for reviewing a certain aspect of modern European intellectuals at the turn of the 20th century by analyzing three main characters of François Truffaut’s Jules et Jim(1962), which is the filmic adaptation of Henri-Pierre Roché’s novel with the same title. The film portrays the triangular relationship of Jules, Jim, and Catherine who are supposed to embody the life of flâneur at the turn of the 20th century. Jules, Jim and Catherine portray various aspects of modern intellectual’s life with their vibrant spirit of curiosity and freedom before the First World War. The film turns into the failure and despair of their life as flâneur, and thereby, it exhibits a tragic portrait of European intellectuals in the turmoil of modern society through the 1930s and 40s.
