We performed frequency response measurements of commercially available tuning fork crystal oscillators and analyzed their measured electrical equivalent circuit parameters of R, L, C-S, and C-P in vacuum and in air. We observed that R and L components increased as the tuning forks were exposed to air while the capacitance components C-S and C-P decreased. Of the changes of the electrical parameters for all the tested tuning forks, the resistance R showed the most significant change. These results seem to indicate that an amplitude modulation detection scheme is advantageous over a frequency modulation detection scheme in sensor applications in gaseous environment.
