초록

Chinoiserie signifies the artistic expression of the Western vision of China. This study examines piano works with Chinese themes composed against the backdrop of the popularity of chinoiserie in Britain during the twentieth century. It aims to reveal a spectrum of Chinese inspiration in Western piano music by analysing how Western perceptions and fantasies concerning Chinese music and sound are incorporated into these works and given musical expression. Furthermore, it explores how such musical representations evoke associations with China. Therefore, this study analyzed the visual elements such as the titles of the works and the covers of the musical scores, as well as the musical techniques used to create an impression of China. The analysis demonstrates that the elements contributing to the formation of an image of China do not necessarily derive directly from Western fantasies or perceptions of Chinese music and sound. Instead, they formally resonate with the characteristics of Chinese music and sound as described in Western writings and may therefore be understood as musical devices that contribute to the devices of Chinoiserie. Simultaneously, these musical elements diverge from Western musical conventions and auditory experience, and are thus interpreted within the framework established by the works’ titles as bearing ‘Chinese’ significance. For this reason, chinoiserie in twentieth-century British piano music is less concerned with the faithful imitation of Chinese music and sound than with the musical representation of China as imagined in the West. In turn, the musical language and compositional techniques employed to evoke images of China were shaped by twentieth-century Western musical aesthetics and British chinoiserie culture. As a result, chinoiserie in twentieth-century British piano music exhibits distinct historical and regional characteristics. Future research could contribute to identifying more general characteristics of Chinoiserie by extending the analysis to works for instrumentations beyond the piano.
