In the current era of artificial intelligence (AI), the integration of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies has led to a highly interconnected world, significantly enhancing the concept of smart cities. Technological advancements have enabled citizens to access intelligent information, such as public camera feeds, parking lot data, and smart agriculture systems. While this evolution has undoubtedly made daily life more convenient, it has also introduced increased risks to the security of smart cities. The vast network of interconnected devices, sensors, and systems has now become a potential target for a wide range of cyber threats. This chapter discusses the fundamental security principles for safeguarding smart cities and IoT ecosystems, followed by an in-depth exploration of the evolving threat landscape of interdependent IoT devices in terms of heterogeneity, resource constraints, network security, data privacy, and regulatory challenges. It provides best practices and security frameworks to address device security, network security, data protection, and more issues. It further explores the impact of emerging security technologies such as blockchain, quantum computing, and AI. This chapter concludes with a summary of key insights, a discussion of future research directions, and recommendations to enhance the security of smart cities. Overall, this chapter serves as a practical resource for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to develop robust security strategies in the rapidly evolving field of IoT ecosystems in smart cities.
