초록
This study aimed to analyze how perfectionism among athletes influences self-compassion and perceived performance, focusing on student athletes in the Seoul metropolitan area. Specifically, it sought to empirically verify the mediating effect of self-compassion in the relationship between perfectionism and perceived performance. To this end, data were collected from 215 high school and university athletes using validated scales for perfectionism, self-compassion, and perceived performance. Analyses were conducted with SPSS and AMOS, including descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and structural equation modeling. The results revealed that adaptive perfectionism exerted positive effects on both self-compassion and perceived performance, while maladaptive perfectionism had negative effects on both variables. Moreover, perfectionism did not directly influence perceived performance, but was identified as an important factor through the mediation of self-compassion. The structural model demonstrated acceptable fit indices, confirming the validity of the research model. These findings suggest that self-compassion functions as a core psychological mediator in the relationship between athletes’ perfectionism and their perception of performance. In other words, the level of self-compassion moderates how perfectionistic tendencies affect performance perception. Therefore, this study provides fundamental data for designing intervention strategies that consider both psychological well-being and performance improvement, and it highlights the need to incorporate self-compassion training into future athlete support programs.
