[Purpose] K-IFRS No. 1116 Lease Standard (IN10) in effect from 2019 fiscal year requires a lessee to recognize lease assets and liabilities for all leases whose lease term exceeds 12 months and whose underlying assets are not small amount. Accordingly, this study examined whether the credit ratings of firms that firstly recognized leased assets and liabilities differed before and after the amendments of K-IFRS No. 1116 (lease) Standard in 2019. In other words, this study empirically investigated the impact of amendments to lease-related K- IFRS on an firm’s credit rating. [Methodology] A regression analysis model was established with the KIS credit score as the dependent variable and a dummy variable of the change in the lease accounting standard as the main explanatory variable to analyze the difference in credit scores before and after the lease accounting standard change for a total of eight years from 2016 to 2021. [Findings] Firms whose lease-related assets and liabilities were not in the books(i.e., previously accounted for as operating leases) before the change in the lease accounting standard showed a significant increase in the entity’s credit rating when lease-related assets and liabilities were in the books after the change. [Implications] The results of this study are significant in that they empirically supported the basis for revising the lease standard of K-IFRS No. 1116.
